Where to stay in Merida, Mexico: best boutique hotels in and around Yucatan’s vibrant, culture-rich capital.
Last updated: September 2023
Upon my first visit to Merida, Mexico in 2019, I would have described the hotel scene in Yucatan’s fabled capital as small, yet respectable. Upon my latest return in 2023, positively abundant. These days, the heritage city is teeming with fabulous stays, both in and around Merida’s anchor Historic Center (known locally as Centro).
Could it have anything to do with the city’s growing appearance on “Best of” lists, like Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards? (Merida landed at #4 among the Best Big Cities in the World in 2022.) Probably. But I feel the Yucatan capital’s revivalist spirit is more linked to the boom of local visionaries leading the charge. Think: passionate creatives transforming otherwise dilapidated colonial buildings into exciting new culinary venues and drinking dens, bohemian artisan shops and galleries, and of course – exceptional hospitality concepts, crossing Maya roots to colonial-era elegance to design-driven modernism.
Here, we’ve rounded up 15 such enclaves begging a check-in during your next visit to Merida. From transportive colonial-era stays to contemporary hideaways – not to mention jungle-immersed retreats – these are the best boutique hotels in and around Merida, Mexico.

But first: travel insurance to the rescue.
Wherever, and whenever, you might be traveling, travel insurance is always a good idea. I personally use and recommend Faye Travel Insurance for their thorough, easy to understand and fair-priced coverage options. Think: emergency medical and sickness benefits in the event of an accident or illness while abroad, compensation for lost luggage and personal effects, and trip protection covering things like unforeseen cancellation, interruption or missed connections.
You can even add optional coverage for your traveling pets, that sweet ride you’ll be renting, extreme sports and accidental vacation rental damage (oops). Plus! A game-changing travel benefit you can add on to your policy: the ability to cancel for any reason. Did I mention a seamless in-app claims process and rapid, on-the-go reimbursements to your digital Faye Wallet? Check pricing here.
Pro Tip: it’s best to buy your travel insurance policy within 14 days of making your initial trip deposit (like when you buy your flights or book your hotel).

Best Hotels Near Merida, Mexico: Chablé Yucatan
A 45 minute drive southwest of Merida’s Historic Center will bring you to the tiny Yucatan town of Chocholá and here, set amidst a transformed 18th-century henequen hacienda tucked into luxuriant jungle, Chablé Yucatan. To say this secluded sanctuary is effectively setting the bar for off-grid luxury in the Yucatan Peninsula would be an understatement.
Forty guest rooms aren’t rooms at all, rather spacious, stand-alone Casitas, Villas and the palatial, 3-bedroom Royal Villa. Each zen refuge has been outfitted with an artful blend of locally sourced furnishings, textiles and decór – as imagined by Mexican interior designer Paulina Morán – spilling onto private terraces with plunge pools, crochet hammocks and outdoor moon showers. (In addition to the double indoor rain showers found in your glass walled, jungle view bathroom, of course.) Book the Royal Villa to laze about a decidedly lavish private terrace – the singular refuge comes complete with a swimming pool weaving in and out of original stone walls of the bygone hacienda.
When not cooling off in your own private pool, you can also take a dip in the property’s freeform swimming pool or ethereal, on-property cenote (limestone swimming hole). Plus: several wellness activities spanning yoga to ancestral Maya ceremonies to a world-class spa, complimentary bikes for touring verdant surrounds, Mexican wine, tequila and spirits tastings and even a honey tasting from the on-property Meliponarium – a sanctuary for rare, endemic Melipona bees. When hunger strikes, indulge in fresh takes on heritage Maya cuisine from poolside Ki’ol or transcendental Ixi’im.
